In sixth grade, they developed their first fantasy game, called dragslay and written in BASIC. In high school Tarn and Zach created a spacecraft game that simulated sections of a rocket blowing off and released their first publicly available game on America Online. Explaining his reluctance to socialize, he said, "I was a get-home-from-school, get-on-the-computer kind of kid." Tarn stated that the main reason they started writing games was to play them themselves, and soon began introducing complicated and unpredictable behavior to achieve more replayability. In fifth grade, Tarn wrote his first animation game with Zach. The brothers grew up playing computer games, drawing their own renditions of the randomly generated creatures they encountered, and logging their journeys in detail. He taught his sons the rudiments of coding at an early age and this shared interest allowed the brothers Tarn and Zach to remain close to each other despite their family's constant shifting due to their father's work. His father, Dan, worked at a waste water treatment plant and used to work in data management. In 2006, he quit during his first year of a mathematics post doctorate at Texas A&M University to focus on game development. He learned programming in his childhood, and took up designing computer games as a hobby. He has been working on the game since 2002 together with his older brother Zach. The authors highlight the public health and environmental risks that plastic exports pose in the developing world, where importers often dump or incinerate an unmanageable glut of plastic waste. Some have wheels, while others are designed to withstand being dragged across rough surfaces.High-income countries have long sent their waste abroad to be thrown away or recycled - and an independent team of experts says they’re inundating the developing world with much more plastic than previously estimated.Īccording to a new analysis published last week, United Nations data on the global waste trade fails to account for “hidden” plastics in textiles, contaminated paper bales, and other categories, leading to a dramatic, 1.8-million-metric-ton annual underestimate of the amount of plastic that makes its way from the European Union, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States to poor countries. If you’ll be moving your trash can around every now and then, especially if it’s heavier, make sure you choose one that can be easily relocated.Any outdoor trash can will be exposed to the elements 24/7, so make sure your lid keeps water out and that the base of your garbage can will keep it steady through even the most intense windstorms. Water resistance is another valuable feature.Since lids aren’t always sold separately by manufacturers, you may even find yourself buying a completely new trash can after losing the lid. A lid that can be removed can easily get lost or accidentally tossed in with the week’s garbage, forcing you to track down a replacement. Many outdoor trash cans have attached lids.Look for a lid that provides security while still making it easy to get your trash inside. Ease of access is another issue, particularly if your trash can is meant for individual item disposal rather than collecting large bags that you bring from inside the house. If you overstuff your bag with trash before removing it, you may find yourself struggling to get the bag out, possibly straining yourself or tearing the bag. One common issue with garbage cans is bag removal. Some outdoor cans come with internal liners that you can remove and clean separately from the outer shell. No matter how careful you are to keep all trash in bags, leaks and spills are unavoidable. Cleaning will always be an issue with garbage cans.Stainless steel finishes can be tempting, but keep in mind they can be prone to showing fingerprints, smudges and dirt more easily than cans of other builds. There are a variety of trash can designs, each with its own benefits.Although it’s not likely to be something you’ll do often, having a removable liner can really come in handy for cleaning. As you’re shopping, consider how easy or difficult it will be to clean your trash can. You can choose between cans made from stainless steel, polypropylene or other materials, as well as selecting from a variety of colors with some cans. The appearance of your trash can will undoubtedly serve as a deciding factor as you shop. Pay close attention to the space you have available for your trash can and shop accordingly. A swing-top lid will keep odors at a minimum while also ensuring access is easy. If you’re looking for a trash can for an area like a workshop or garage, you can swap features like lid security for convenient access. In those instances, look for a lid that locks between uses. Critters can also be a concern, especially if you’re in a heavily-forested area prone to bears. Look for one with a lid that seals well enough to lock in odors without being tough to open when you or your guests need access. You can find cans of all different sizes and designs, each with unique features that work better in some areas than others.Īs with indoor receptacles, odor protection is an important feature of any outdoor trash can, especially if it’s in an area where you’ll be entertaining. Patios and decks need different receptacles than the type of garbage can you’d use for your weekly trash collection. But there are a few things to consider before you buy one. You may even find yourself dedicating time to clean up after every backyard gathering.Ī good outdoor trash can will save you loads of time and energy over the years. Collecting waste to take inside when you’re grilling out or entertaining is inconvenient. You likely have garbage cans throughout your home, but if you spend any time outdoors, trash disposal can become a problem. You can use the program to play videos and audio files conveniently. The notation looks like this: hsl(325, 100%, 72%), where the Hue is a value between 0 and 360, and the saturation and lightness are values between 0% and 100%. TL DR → The HSL color notation (short for Hue, Saturation and Lightness) is a more human-friendly way of specifying colors on the web. Refer to this CSS Tricks article for more details about the #RRGGBBAA color notation. For example, #61FAFF7F represents a light blue at 50% opacity. This extra set of digits represents the alpha value for the color (its level of transparency). HEX-8 (#RRGGBBAA): An additional optional set of two hexadecimal digits was introduced for HEX color codes. It's common to use colors like #333, #FFF, #000, which make for a short way to represent grayscale color values. For example, the #88AA33 color can be represented as just #8A3. HEX shorthand: when both values for each color channel (red, green and blue) are the same, the HEX color code notation can be shortened to just 3 hexadecimal digits. Otherwise though, it's most often very difficult to just look at a HEX color code and have a good idea of what color it represents. I believe that one of the reasons why HEX has been a popular way to represent colors is due to how short/compact the notation is. Good examples of such grayscale values would be #808080, #4D4D4D and #FAFAFA. Still, over time, many designers come to remember certain HEX color value, especially those that are in the grayscale spectrum. The first 2 hexadecimal digits represent the red value, the middle 2 represent the green value and the last two represent the blue value.įor the vast majority of us, it's really difficult to think in a hexadecimal manner (16 digits, from 0 to 9 and from A to F), so when working with HEX color codes most people use tools like color pickers to visually select a color and get its HEX color code value. It's simply a concise way to represent a RGB notation. The HEX color notation (short for hexadecimal) has perhaps been the most popular way to represent colors on the web and in design tools over the years. The letters can be capitalized or not, it makes no difference. TL DR → The HEX color notation is a shorthand for RGB and is coded as #RRGGBB, where each color channel is represented with two hexadecimal digits from 0 to F: 00 for 0 and FF for 255. These different notations can become especially handy when composing colors using CSS variables. 15) and we can also use a notation that omits the commas: rgb(255 186 140) and with that comma-less notation the alpha value can also be passed-in like this: rgb(255 186 140 /. For example, it's now possible to specify the alpha value without using RGBA: rgb(88, 17, 213. You're likely already familiar with how to specify a color using the RGB color notation, but you may be less familiar with additional syntax for it that has been introduced mainly with the CSS color module level 4. Additional notations like HEX and HSL are just different ways of specifying colors in the sRGB color space. The RGB color notation (short for red, green and blue) is really the basis for color on the web currently. The notation looks like this: rgb(44, 233, 77) and opacity can also be specified using RGBA: rgba(44, 233, 77. TL DR → The RGB color notation represents each color channel (red, green and blue) with a value between 0 and 255. In total, these notations give access to 16,777,216 colors. These notations are simply 3 different ways to specify a color, and any of these 3 doesn't give you access to any additional colors. Using color on the web, whether this is via CSS, HTML or JavaScript, is done using a color code notation like RGB, HSL or HEX. □ This tool is made possible thanks to iro.js and chroma.js, two awesome JavaScript libraries to play with colors. Anyone in the pressing business with ethics would spare a book from the process if they believed it would be detrimental to the book's health. All the services I know of happen to offer a per-screening service and will let you know what you should do. That's why I think it's important to really consider the benefits and risks of getting it done on a case by case basis. I'm not saying you feel this way, but some people (like me) had unrealistic expectations when they first start getting their books pressed. There is no point in getting a 9.8 pressed unless the book drops a grade, which would be the proper time to assess the situation. If they were pressed by the handler, then it was done without my permission or knowledge. I never get 9.8s pressed when I play the game. The word "quick" just makes a little nervous in this context. It's more of an artform that a fast-food-style, instant gratification. Some people take the time to watch the book for a while after the pressing is performed, to make sure that the book doesn't "spring" back. A certain amount of patience is involved. The key is to have it done by the right person who will take the proper care for the proper price. Yeah definitely learned to not press anything.first time I ever did it and i got burnedįortunately it only ruined 1 and not both as I submitted 2 and the other kept its 9.8 With all that handling, anything can happen at any stage in the process. The book is exchanged over several hands. The book gets packed and shipped around several times. The crack, sign, and resub game is very risky. That seems to be the typical cop out for ruining someone's book.ĭISCLAIMER - it's not necessarily the fault of CCS.
